Duane E. Alger Jr. AUBURN — Duane E. Alger Jr., 64, of Auburn, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at the UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, following an illness.
Duane was with D-Troop at Camp Eagle 1968 through 1969. Born in Greenfield, he graduated from Hopedale High School and attended Northeastern University to study culinary arts. Duane served in the Army 101st Airborne in Vietnam for a tour before being injured. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts and the Cross of Gallantry.
Duane returned to Worcester to work as a sheet rocker for several years before joining the College of the Holy Cross grounds department until he retired. He was very active in veterans groups, and was a member and past commander of the Disabled American Veteran Chapter 4 in Worcester; a former member of the Chester P. Tuttle Post American Legion, a member of the Central Mass Vietnam Veterans group and the Screaming Eagles Association of the 101st Airborne. He leaves his wife of 28 years, Donna M. (Lanciault) Alger. Local survivors include his daughter Beth A. Kline and her husband David of Rutland. The funeral was Aug. 24 in Saint Joseph’s Church, Auburn, with burial in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, Auburn, directed arrangements. (brittonfuneralhomes.com)
