Accident Summary:
AIRCRAFT 774 WAS ON A SCRAMBLE FROM QUAN LOI TO SHOOT THE GAP FOR A COMBAT ASSAULT. THIS WAS THE AIRCRAFT'S AND THE CREW'S FIRST MISSION OF THE DAY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS AT 60 KNOTS AND 200 FEET WHEN THE CREW HEARD A LOUD POP FROM THE ENGINE. CHECKING THE INSTRUMENTS, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER ENTERED AUTOROTATION AND CHOSE NOT TO DO A 180 BACK TO THE RUNWAY BECAUSE OF LOW AIRSPEED AND ALTITUDE. SEEING THAT THE AIRCRAFT WOULD NOT CLEAR HIGH VOLTAGE WIRES, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER PULLED A LITTLE PITCH TO INCREASE THE GLIDE. THIS WAS SUCCESSFUL AND THE AUTOROTATION WAS TERMINATED WITH MAXIMUM PITCH AND THE AIRCRAFT HIT HARD WITH ALMOST NO GROUND RUN. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED BY THE CREW.\\
