Accident Summary:

 ^WO1 COLEMAN^, ON THE AFTERNOON OF THE ACCIDENT, TOOK OFF AT 1615 HOURS. ^MR. COLEMAN^ HAD FLOWN 6.2 HOURS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THESE 6.2 HOURS CONSISTED OF AN ADMINISTRATIVE MISSION IN DIRECT SUPPORT OF THE 23D MP COMPANY. ^MR. COLEMAN^ REFUELED AT CHU LAI SOUTH POL 1.2 HOURS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT THERE WAS 300 PUUNDS OF FUEL REMAINING. ^MR. COLEMAN^ WAS FLYING ON THE OUTSIDE OF CHU LAI PERIMETER WHEN IN A RIGHT TURN, OF APPROXIMATELY 20 DEGREES BANK. 200 FEET AGL AND 60 KNOTS, THE ENGINE FAILED SUDDENLY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SEEN BY THE GUARD ON DUTY IN TOWER #51 TO BEGIN WHAT APPEARED TO BE A NORMAL DESCENT TO INSPECT SOMETHING IN THE WIRE. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE SAW THE GROUND COMING UP FAST AND THAT HE ATTEMPTED TO PULL ALL HE HAD TO CUSHION THE LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT APPARENTLY HIT VERY HARD IN A LEVEL SLIGHTLY NOSE LOW ATTITUDE BREAKING OFF THE LEFT SKID. THE AIRCRAFT THEN BOUNCED ONCE AND ROLLED ON ITS RIGHT SIDE. THE LEFT REAR PASSENGER'S SEAT BROKE COMPLETELY AWAY AND THE PASSENGER SLID OUT FROM UNDER HIS SEAT BELT AND WAS THROWN OUT OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER AND FRONT LEFT PASSENGER WERE ABLE TO CRAWL OUT. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO EXIT BECAUSE HE COULD NOT REACH HIS SEAT BELT RELEASE AND HIS LEG WAS TRAPPED UNDER THE COLLECTIVE. THE CREW OF THE UH-1 THAT LANDED SECONDS AFTER THE CRASH EXTRACTED THE PILOT.\\
